Ensuring everyone in West Sussex benefits...

Disability Sport

The Paralympic Summer Games are the second largest sporting event in the world, second only to the Summer Olympics. Originating at Stoke Mandeville hospital in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, the Games (although with a different name) were first held in 1948 to coincide with the London Olympics. There is a great opportunity to take the inspiration of the Paralympics to develop sport for disabled people in West Sussex, and plans are being developed to ensure the right opportunities are available for people to take part in sport, and to achieve their personal best.

There are already many opportunities for disabled people to take part in sport, whether at school, in clubs, or in sports venues. The Sussex County Sports Partnership Trust website lists many of these opportunities, including multi-sport clubs across the county. The Sports Partnership, with support from the Co-operative Group, organises the annual Sussex Parallel Youth Games. 400 participants from West Sussex, East Sussex and Brighton & Hove took part in the 2009 event on the 10th June at Olympos Burgess Hill, an approved 2012 pre-grames training camp venue.
