Design a mythical creature to take part in 2012 celebrations

A competition has been announced in the Horsham District – closing date 24 June 2009.

As part of the Olympic Handover celebrations in West Sussex last August, a mysterious egg was given to Horsham District at the Big Picnic – the egg is about to hatch, as it takes the next step of its journey towards becoming a mythical creature to take part in 2012 celebrations.

But what could be inside the egg? What type of magical creature will hatch from the celebrate egg? Nobody is quite sure, so Horsham District Council is holding a competition for anybody to suggest a design for the hatchling, which will grow and represent Horsham in 2012.

Anybody wishing to take part in the competition to design the hatchling should draw, paint or sketch their ideas onto a piece of A4 paper, remembering to put their name and contact details on the back, and send it by 24 June 2009 to:

During London 2012 ‘Open Weekend’ 24 – 26 July 2009, organisations across West Sussex are opening themselves up to the public to celebrate art, culture, sport and everything that makes up the London 2012 Games, as part of the 3-year countdown to the opening ceremony in 2012.  In the Horsham area, the District Council’s Leisure Centres - Broadbridge Heath, Pavilions, Steyning and Billingshurst - will be ‘opening up’ and providing a variety of activities.

The winning design to the competition will be announced on Sunday 26 July 2009 at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre, when the egg will hatch. 

The project is one feature of the four year West Sussex-Ahead of the Game cultural programme, to parallel the national Cultural Olympiad.
