Local businesses on track to make most of London 2012 opportunities

Posted on 13/11/08

West Sussex businesses are joining the race to make the most of the opportunities offered by the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

Over 25 businesses from across the county attended a Business Link workshop at the Avisford Hilton last Thursday, 6 November 2008 to help them take advantage of the landmark sporting event. Sponsored by West Sussex - Ahead of the Game, the countywide initiative to help the county make the most of the 2012 Games, the free workshop advised businesses on how they could obtain one of the 6,000 contracts on offer.

The workshop included discussing and writing a quality management statement, which is a fundamental part of the application process on ‘Compete For’, the London 2012 website for businesses. Businesses were also encouraged to work together to identify what quality meant to them, their customers and how they achieve it in their business. This laid the foundations for constructing individual Quality Management Statements, as well as providing a good business networking opportunity.

Local businessman Martin Hobbs, from Margin Services in Rustington, said: “I found it very useful, and will now be able to progress my ‘Compete For’ application, which I hope will bring me new opportunities from both London 2012 & the public sector in general.”

Councillor Norman Dingemans, Arun’s Cabinet Member for Economic and Cultural Development, said: “I am delighted that so many local businesses came along to get advice on how they can showcase their talents on the biggest stage. We will continue to work with businesses over the next four years to ensure they make the most of the opportunities the Olympics will bring.”

West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Economy Deborah Urquhart said: “A number of West Sussex businesses have already won London 2012 contracts, and we want to make sure more local businesses have the right information and support to help them bid for contracts.

Further business workshops are being planned to take place across the county early in 2009.” West Sussex businesses that have already won London 2012 contracts include Goring based Bond International Software (UK) Ltd, and Trustco Plc from Shoreham-by-Sea. The Quality Management Workshop is part of a series of events in West Sussex, developed to assist businesses with making the most of opportunities linked to London 2012.
