Over the past four years, the London 2012 Games have provided the inspiration for a four-year celebration of arts and culture, designed to enable the widest range of people across the UK to take part. The London 2012 Cultural Olympiad is the largest cultural celebration in the history of the modern Olympic and Paralympic Movements.
Since the beginning of the programme, more than 16 million people across the UK have attended or taken part in performances, over 169,000 people attended more than 8,300 workshops and some 2,500 cultural projects have been awarded the London 2012 Inspire mark. The culmination of the Cultural Olympiad is the London 2012 Festival, providing over 10 million chances to see free world-class events throughout the UK
Activities began on the Olympic and Paralympic Handover Days in 2008. Here in West Sussex, we celebrated the Olympic Handover from Beijing to London on 24 August 2008 with the BIG PICNIC, a range of county-wide events including circus performers, giant board games, global music and film screenings. A few weeks later we marked Paralympic Handover Day with a special event to launch West Sussex-Ahead of the Game.
