Roll of Honour

We hope you enjoy the West Sussex Roll of Honour, made up of people with strong connections to the county, who have competed in previous Summer Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

Through help from the public and our own research, we have compiled a list of people who have competed in Summer Games from 1912 in Stockholm, to 2008 in Beijing. The more well known include Sally Gunnell OBE, Daley Thompson CBE and Duncan Goodhew MBE. But what about the achievements of John Sheffield at the 1936 Games in Berlin, or of Denise St Aubyn Hubbard in London in 1948? Click on the Games logos to discover more.

The Roll of Honour is made up of people who were born in West Sussex; went to school, college or university here; have lived in the county for some time; or have competed for one of our sports clubs. We want to make sure we honour all our former Olympians and Paralympians. If you know about people you think should be added please contact us.

We would also like you to get in touch if you can help us source photographs of the people featured, or can tell us more about their stories.

We hope we will be adding many of our 2012 Hopefuls to the Roll of Honour after the London 2012 Games.

And a little extra ...

Since launching the Roll of Honour, a number of people have been in touch asking us to acknoweldge some of the county's most talented sportsmen and women who have not had the chance to compete in an Olympic or Paralympic Games. We are very happy to receive profiles of these people, and will feature them on our West Sussex's Most Talented page.

The Hopefuls

We hope you enjoy the features on our 2012 Hopefuls, made up of people with strong connections to West Sussex, who have high hopes of competing at the London 2012 Olympic Games or Paralympic Games.

Some of our 2012 Hopefuls have competed at previous Games, including Paralympic swimmer Sascha Kindred, and World Champion swimmer Gemma Spofforth, and some are training to compete at their first Games in London, including handball player Mark Hawkins, and sailor Megan Pascoe.

We will be tracking the progress of our 2012 Hopefuls, and will do whatever we can to support them over the next two years.

Click on the photographs of our 2012 Hopefuls to find out more about their West Sussex connection, their achievements, and their journey to 2012.
