  • Fishbourne Roman Palace & Gardens

    Date 14/07/2012

Location Roman Way, Fishbourne, PO19 3QR

    Description

The Palace welcomes the re-enactors of the Legio Secunda Augusta for a weekend that brings the Ancient Sports, which inspired the Olympic Movement, back to life. Visitors can either sit back and enjoy cheering for their favourite athlete, or work up a sweat themselves as they try their hands and feet at some choice disciplines. Set within the living history encampment, visitors can quiz the athletes on how best to prepare for a competition 2,000 years ago and witness some of the religious ceremonies that would have been an important part of the Ancient Games. In the encampment, visitors can also meet a Roman cook, crafts people, a doctor and a scribe, and see examples of recreated Roman furniture – similar to that once used here at Fishbourne Roman Palace.

“This really is a once in a lifetime opportunity. As part of the celebrations, our visitors can be part of a Roman-style sporting event within the original remains of the Roman Palace” said Palace Director, Jaane Rowehl. “Games were an important part of Roman life- a time when communities came together to worship their Gods and celebrate a shared heritage. This event will offer everyone the chance to find out how much of these ancient traditions still survive in the Olympic Games today.”

Fishbourne Roman Palace and Gardens is part of the local team supporting community events for London2012 in the Chichester area. Fishbourne Roman Palace dates back to the 1st century AD, the beginning of Roman occupation in Britain. Uncovered in 1960, the north wing of this remarkable building remains an important visitor attraction and archaeological site for anyone interested in discovering more about Roman life, politics, art and architecture.
